H.E. Dr. Ly Thuch (Senior Minister in the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Council of Ministers) delivering his welcome speech.
Excerpts from the opening speech kindly delivered by H.E. Dr. Ly Thuch during the ASM @ Cambodia Welcome Reception.
“Good evening and welcome to Cambodia the Kingdom of Wonder…. I have a very great honor and delighted on behalf of the Royal Government of Cambodia, to be part of this historic moment in the development of senior professional golf in Asia as the Asian Seniors Tour breaks new ground with the staging of inaugural ASM @ Cambodia tournament this December at the Siem Reap Lake Resort Golf Club.
The proof is there for all to see that the AST has really grown into an international entity as I note that the members of Asian Seniors PGA Tour hail from all 4 corners of the globe …..
As the Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Year 2 Cambodian Prime Minister’s Cup (Golf Championship) and as the Deputy Secretary General of Cambodian Golf Federation, I would like to bid you all a very warm welcome on behalf of the golfers of Cambodia.
I am pleased to see the kind support received by the ASM @ Cambodia from main sponsor’s Beeline, Tiger Beer, the Siem Reap Lake Resort Golf Club, Royal Angkor Resort – the Official Hotel, and Khaou Chuly group, and from supporting sponsors Galavani, AES Group, RMA Group, Sterling Project Management, Ashor (Cambodia), FCC, Johnny Walker, Henry Butcher, Dufry, and the Oral Group.
I am confident that with your continued kind support we can look forward to the ASM @ Cambodia becoming an annual event for the Cambodian golfers to look forward to, and I understand that plans are already underway for the second edition of the ASM @ Cambodia to be staged in Mar / Apr 2011 during the AST’s 2011 spring season.
RMA Group have kindly offered a Ford Ranger as a Hole In One prize, and Galavani have also generously offered a Honda motorcycle as another, and (I understand that) should the motorcycle be unclaimed, then it will be auctioned off to raise money for charity… and I understand that the ASM @ Cambodia event, and the AS PGA Tour members have already raised over US$ 1,000 for the Red Cross, and anticipate raising more over the course of the ASM @ Cambodia tournament week, and that funds raised will be donated by the Red Cross to the relatives of victims of the recent tragedy during the recent water festival celebration.
Judging by the number of my colleagues from the Royal Government of Cambodia, the many leaders from Cambodia’s business community, along with some of Cambodia’s leading amateur golfers present this evening, it is clear to me that seniors golf is most certainly of great interest to the amateur golfers of Cambodia.
I understand that the ASM @ Cambodia Pro-Ams cater to golfers of all levels of ability, (I certainly fall into this category, having even asked that we be allowed to play off the white…) however for the more accomplished low handicappers amongst you, there will be an Amateur Finals Championship for the leading golfers from the 2 pro-Ams on Wednesday 8th December.
I was also told that there will also be a 1 day amateur stroke play tournament on Thu 9 Dec 10 during which the amateur participants will compete for the honour of being the first to win the Beeline Cup that will be staged in conjunction with the final day of the ASM @ Cambodia 2010 professional tournament.
I see the establishment of the annual ASM @ Cambodia as a very important achievement which will help to spread greater regional and international awareness and help support the growth in the Cambodian golf tourism industry.
Cambodia under the great and wised leadership of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia every sector have been improved and developed.
Cambodia is enjoying peace and stability. It became the pearl of Asian and the focus of various international business groups for investment and developments. There are lot of what we can do together and share the prosperity and progress.
In addition to golf tourism income, I do believe that the annual ASM @ Cambodia will play a small but by no means insignificant role in helping to expand the level of individual and corporate awareness as to the considerable business and investment opportunities which Cambodia has to offer.
As Chuan Campbell the Asian Senior Tours Chairmen and founder said to me the other day, “if you build it and they will follow……” and he confidently expects that next year’s event will be bigger, as will the prize money….
On behalf of all the sponsor’s and participants I would like to recognize and thank the Vice Chairman of the ASM @ Cambodia’s organizing committee Salah Essa as well as Socheata from Beeline, Samen, viseth, Sokkung, & Rattana , for their hard work, determination and boundless enthusiasm. Sincere thanks to all who have helped to make this event happening now.
Chuan recently drove up to Cambodia in October when he, Chris Ponniah and Salah, were making arrangement for the tournament, and his comments about how safe he feels driving in Cambodia, and the high level of professionalism and helpfulness with which customs and immigration matters were managed and arranged to help the ASM @ tournament is very much appreciated.
It leaves me to thank you one and all for being here in Cambodia, pearl of Asia and I wish you fair weather, good golf and may you hit them straight and true.
