The first ever staging of the Bangkok Asian Senior PGA Tour on the 16th and 17th of Decemebr 2010 saw a clean sweep by Philippines Golf Professionals into the top 3 places.

The Muang Kaew golf course condition was highly praised by all the professionals “…..as the best we have played this season on tour.....”

The Muang Kaew Golf was playing a shortened 6,650 yards course on both days - the winning score of one under par reflecting the taxing nature of the course. Greens speeds of 11 on the stimpmeter and a gusting wind tested all the players.

After round one 4 players were tied on par scores of 72 those being - Bagtas, Fernando and Hernandez from the Philippines, Ramayah from Malaysia and Thai professional Nickham.

One shot further back was Klaiklueng from Thailand on 73, Australian Mike Sinkinson on 74 and a gaggle of golfers on 75 including rookie sensation Scott Puzey (pictured below) from the USA, Jochpasong and Sawargwong from Thailand and the eventual third place professional Jay Hernadez.

In the second round the first to slip was Sinkinson, battling a loss of form and one of the pre-tournament favourites, slipped to a disastrous 92 and slipping to outside the top 25.

American Puzey followed his opening 75 with a 77 to slip down to 10th place and a total of 152, overall a good return for a rookie player new to the professional ranks.

Ramayah returned a second round 76 moving him down to 148 and 5th place, Nickham’s 78 moved him to tied 7th place with Klaiklueng leaving the top 3 players from the Philippines to share the rewards.

Hernadez made the biggest move up the leader board from tied 7th to 3rd spot with a one under 71. A solid 36 out was followed by a strong 35 made up of one bogey on the 11th par four and then a super strong finish of birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to apply pressure to Bagtas and Fernando, only to see his birdie put slip agonisingly passed the hole on the 18th green.

Fernando slipped to 2nd spot, shooting 73, lost the tournament on the back nine with a one over par 37 – including a bogey on the par 5 13th and a disastrous triple bogey 6 on the testing par 3 14th holes. This triple gave the eventual winner, Ernie Bagtas a 3 shot swing and he never looked back. Solid scoring nines of 35 and 36 shooting a one under 71 and two day score of 143.

The last few holes were not without drama as Fernando fought back after the triple on the 14th with his birdies on the 16th and 17th to Bagtas’ pars – however the older Bagtas’ experience and solid finish of 5 straight pars saw him through for the 2 shot victory.

“We were delighted to be asked to host this Asian Senior PGA event. All the players have enjoyed the golf course, including the two Pro Am days. The golf course staff did a great job getting the golf course into tournament condition and we hope to host this and similar events throughout the next few years. Our golf course's condition, location and our tournament experience make us a good choice for such events” commented Mike Varney General Manager of Muang Kaew Golf Course.
